Details:
For those who enjoy comets you will remember Comet C/2020 S3 (Erasmus) from last year and how nice and bright it was with a long tail. It spent the winter and spring in the glare of the Sun. Now that it is back in our morning skies it is a lot fainter but still has a nice long tail, in fact it now has 2 tails. The main tail was a fan tail at least 12' long at a PA of 257 degrees and it was 2' wide, unfortunately the tail extended beyond the image field of view. The second tail was 80" long at a PA of 319 degrees. The coma was about 40" wide. The images show the tails fairly well, the enlarged insets on the lower right show a close up of the coma and the short tail above and to the right of the coma. The comet was magnitude 16.7. The gif is composed of 4 images with each image 300 seconds long. Tails are still hard to see in either white or black background which I combined in this gif, even with reduced size. The coma of the comet is at the center of the gif to the right of the star, north is up and east is left. The main tail flows to the right and a little below the coma (PA 257 degrees) and extends beyond the field of view of these images. The shorter tail is above and right of the coma (PA 319 degrees). Yes, all very faint in the gif. As usual, to get the proper resolution of the images and the gif you must select the big image of the either the images or the gif and that will give you a much better image or gif to look at.
