Details:
A large red sprite appeared from a thunderstorm in Sonora, Mexico, near the Arizona / Mexico border, 300 miles away from my viewpoint at McDonald Observatory, Texas. Within a couple of seconds of the sprite, a bright meteor from the Perseid meteor shower pierced the sky. Sprites and meteors occur at around the same altitude.
