Details:
These images and gif show Comet C/2021 O1 (Nishimura) on August 3 and August 4 before the comet's close approach to Earth on August 5. The images were collected with the comet only 4-6 degrees above the eastern horizon in twilight, the images on August 3 were collected thru clouds which appeared to make the software think the comet was a full magnitude fainter than on July 26 and August 4 when there were no clouds in the sky. On mornings when the sky is clear the comet is about magnitude 9. The comet will reach perihelion in it's orbit on 12 August 2021 when it will be 74 million miles from the Sun. The comet will make it's close approach to Earth on 5 August 2021 at 158 million miles. The comet continues to show a coma at least 0.02 degrees wide and a faint fan tail west of the coma. As usual, to get a good looking image click on the big image to get the proper resolution so you can read the information on the images.
