When I decided to use the NG 114 reflector for solar imaging yesterday with the .5" Baader filter off-axis, I noted a big, blurry sunspot that was not there in the hydrogen alpha view. Thought I had a dirty eyepiece (ALWAYS blame the eyepiece first!), but not so. Then took off the Baader filter and looked down the tube. Sure enough, in addition to the spider diagonal holder, I had a tiny real spider near the focal plane. Carefully removed her and her web to a nearby bush, and took the nice shots of AR 2833 I showed you yesterday. Have plenty of cats, so no surprise, this morning as I focused the Lunt 60, noted a cat hair on the eyepiece...but wait, as I move the Sun, the dark thin straight line moved with the disk! It was just left (east of) AR 2833, and a very well defined filament that was unusually straight and dark. Wonder how long the linear alignment can last in the Sun's turbulent chromosphere?
