Interesting discussion about red auroras. Every time I have seen brilliant red auroras here in Alaska they have been to the south. Normally in south central Alaska we look for auroras to the north, but in my experience, the red ones have always been in the southern sky. This red aurora photographed above Anchorage, Alaska the day after Thanksgiving 2001 was no exception.
