Details:
Relatively clear skies before dawn on Wednesday prompted me to try to photograph the old waning crescent Moon and 3 planets Saturn, Venus and Jupiter below it at first light. Despite some of bands of thin cloud close to the Cecil Kop horizon a series of pictures taken between 5.06 and 5.13 am show first Venus, then Saturn and finally Jupiter appearing between them (see 3 image montage). Although the thin crescent Moon with Earthshine shone bright above the clouds, the planets were partially obscured so were almost invisible to the naked eye and can only be seen with difficulty in some photos. Their visibility has been enhanced by minimal application of Star Spikes Pro filter. Camera: Tripod-mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS40 in night scenery and sunset modes.
