Details:
This phenomenon was actually observed & photographed by my brother in Virginia. He writes, "I have no idea, Mart, what caused the 'light crack in the sky' phenomenon here the other day! The sun was not up there behind the clouds where the light streak was, as it was 4:45pm with sunset at 5pm, so the sun was almost down way over in the West-- I'd actually gone out early to get sunset pics in case there was a good one, with all the clouds out there! And the light streak, which lasted for a good 5 min, was completely across the peak of the sky, going North to South!
