The Spooky Green Flash of Halloween As the Full Moon rose in the east on October 31st, 2020, I was treated (not tricked) to a rare and wonderful sight, a green flash on top of a pumpkin orange lunar disk on Halloween. This Moon also happened to be a Blue Moon, if you subscribe to the 2nd Full Moon a month idea, a Super-Mini Moon because it was the smallest Full Moon of 2020, being 405,840 km from Earth and was the Hunter Full Moon because it was the next Full Moon to follow the Harvest Moon (Oct.1st, 2020). All this combined made for a real treat on my Halloween. The atmosphere was clearly playing tricks by giving me the green flash, but also making the lunar disk appear to have been reflected in a pool of water, but instead is only a ½ degree above the horizon. Image cropped from an original using a Canon 60D, tripod mounted with a Canon 100-400mm lense and 1.4 extender (560mm), set at ISO 1250, f/8 for 1/30 second exposure.
