Details:
On Monday, August 10, a violent derecho storm pushed across all of Iowa and Illinois wreaking havoc in a 400 x 60 mile swath. Power was severely disrupted and trees downed as a result. But I had to look on the bright side because the majority of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and surrounding communities were without power. This provided the unique opportunity to view and image the Milky Way from my location. This view is looking south from Marion, Iowa. The light dome is from Iowa City 25 miles to my south. Normally with the light pollution of Cedar Rapids, I would not be able to see or image the Milky Way in this much detail. Hey Cedar Rapids - Dim Down the Lights and Save the Night! This image was captured with a Canon 6D camera with a Rokinon 14mm lens at f/2.8. I used ISO 1000 and a 25 second exposure.
