Details:
Venus is quickly drawing closer to the Sun--and Earth: tonight made the first time in its evening apparition that it was close enough for its phase to be clearly seen through the zoom lens at maximum telephoto. (Which probably goes to show most zoom lenses perform at their worst at maximum zoom.) The inset shows the similarity in the phases of the Moon and Venus.
The wide shot was taken 10 minutes after sunset. Venus is actually visible in this photo--click to follow the arrow in the full-size image if you need convincing. I didn't try to search for Mercury in the photo--Venus was hard enough to find.
