Details:
Zimbabwe’s rainy seasons are notorious for lightning strikes which result in the country having one of the world’s highest per capita lightning fatality rate. The most dangerous storms usually occur in early to mid-season which lasts from November to April. This year there have been an unusual number of late rainy season storms with spectacular lightning as the accompanying animation and three sets of pictures show. These were taken in Mutare on March 27th, April 8th and 15th. On all three occasions the storms originated from the southeast and headed northwest (from top left to bottom right in the mosaics) which is the opposite direction to that normally experienced when the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is still south of the equator. The storm on April 15th produced very energetic lightning with two multiple strikes being captured on video which can be viewed at https://youtu.be/sAkGajsLxHw The first struck 7 times and the second 10 times at the same points on the ground.
