Details:
An animated GIF of the oldest man-made satellite still in orbit, Vanguard 1, launched 61 years ago March 17, 1958. Only 3 satellites were launched before this one, but all have decayed out of orbit. Vanguard 1 is a sphere, only 16 cm (6.3 inches) in diameter, and was about 500 miles up at the time of this video (which is slowed down to 50%). According to CalSky.com, this should have passed directly through the middle of the frame at about 02:18:40.5; it was exactly on time, but shifted very slightly about 5 arcminutes, probably due to a small error in the elevation of my observing site.
