Details:
These colorful wisps of clouds appeared in the west after sunset in an otherwise clear sky in central New Mexico. At the time of the photo, the sun was about 9 degrees below the horizon and the clouds were visible up to 10 degrees altitude. This places the clouds at up to 68 km altitude in the mesosphere. The cause was most likely the Minuteman III missile that was launched from Vandenberg AFB in California on February 5.
