A look back at one of the many impressive aurora displays from 2016, this was by no means the biggest, but it was notable for the wave like structures which have now been labeled as "aurora dunes" in a study by the University of Helsinki. This isn't the first time I've seen these aurora waves, the first was the 22nd January 2012, and I think there may have been some during the large display on the 7th October 2015. Great to get an explanation for this unusual aurora form. https://youtu.be/WT9LLqBmigI
