Details:
Betelguese is bright in near IR, and I was curious how comparatively bright it might still be. Although seeing in Tucson was rather poor tonight it was good enough to see Orion so I imaged it with a Nikon D7100 modified for 830 nm near IR cutoff using a 50 mm lens and a stationary tripod. This is a 30 sec stack comprised of 1.6 sec images because of the stationary mount. As shown in the photo in near IR Betelguese is much brighter than adjacent Bellatrix and Orion Belt stars in contrast to its fainting at visible wavelengths. It will likely clear next days and with the camera on a tracking mount better imagery should be possible, but the present image shows the fainting is differently viewed in IR.
