Better than New Year fireworks – by far! What an amazing way to end 2019.
Here on Kvaløya outside Tromsø in northern Norway it is still polar darkness and we won’t see the sun above the horizon until the end of January 2020. Today, however, the sky turned bright despite polar darkness and today’s sky was by far the brightest sky that we have seen here since the Sun disappeared in November.
As reported earlier on Spaceweather.com nacreous clouds were observed by passengers on airplanes above Tromsø a few days ago, but from the ground only very little was visible through tiny gaps in the cloud-cover. Today, conditions were more favorable!
Attached is a photo of my daughter (dressed up as Santa Claus) pulled by a reindeer (my wife) in the falling snow with PSCs glowing on the southern horizon as a reminder that the Sun is still out there somewhere. Later, even bigger gaps in the snow-filled Cumulus appeared and the PSCs above them were among the most intense I have ever seen.
This was the perfect end of 2019 and the most beautiful fireworks display imaginable!
