Details:
Northern Lights from the largest passenger plane in the world. China Southern Airbus A380 enroute Los Angeles to Guangzhou. A faint arc appeared while we were abeam Juneau, while passing Anchorage, the Northern Lights exploded in to all shapes and multiple colors, indicating the arrival of an enhanced solar wind, and shortly afterwards filled half the sky. The Auroras lasted all the way till we passed the Kamchatka peninsula of Russia. What a way to end the decade! Taking photos like this from a flight is difficult due to window reflections, so the previous night I cut out a piece of black paper with a hole to fit the lens through, and used that to shield the reflections on the windows. I also chose a seat that would maximize the Aurora's reflections on the massive A380 wing.
