Details:
At my age, the times when I am able to say "I have never seen anything like that before," have become very few and far, far between. The latest rarity occurred yesterday evening while my family and I were on our way home from dinner. We had been having rounds of torrential rain and intense, purple lightning for the past few hours, and as the sky seemed to open up a bit, a strange yellowish glow appeared in the thinning clouds that quickly disappeared. Then, I looked to the WSW horizon, and was struck by this sight: cloud coloration the likes of which I had never seen before! My wife and children all saw the same thing, and my cell phone did an admirable job recording the naked eye impression. In this image, however, the only editing I did was to straighten, crop, and slightly drop the shadow values using old Picasa 3 software. This made the colors pop, without any adjustments to color balance or saturation. The sun was still 4 minutes from setting, so no volcanic influence was in play. Image made with Motorola moto g 6, 1/40th sec. exp. @ f/1.8 and ISO 109 at 7:03:56 pm, CDT.
