Details:
Airglow @ Callanish Yesterday evening I was able to admire the most fascinating airglow display that I have ever seen, with naked-eye-visible waves which were moving in the sky above me, perfectly framing the background Milky Way! In the foreground instead, the magnificent megalithic site of Callanish, 5000 years old! It was an incredible feeling being able to observe such a show from such an ancient location, while strong Atlantic winds swept over the place! The airglow is caused by a number of processes (like the recombination of atoms which were photoionized by the Sun, or the chemiluminescence caused by the reactions between oxygen and nitrogen) in the atmosphere of the Earth, at about 100 km of height!
