Details:
A small crowd of photographers gathered at this popular lookout near Christchurch on the evening of the (unofficial) first day of Spring here in New Zealand hoping to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Australis. As astronomical twilight faded to night, a brilliant (for us!) naked eye display of tall rays formed reaching up towards the Large Magellanic Cloud. There were plenty of excited gasps amongst the crowd. I was helping a couple of fellow photographer friends who'd never seen, let alone photographed, the aurora before so they were well pleased with the show. The camera shows the brilliant colours of the display - particularly the blue shades of the tops of the rays, illuminated by the recently set sun. It was a short lived outburst of activity though as it subsided a few minutes later, I recorded the path of the ISS across the scene. Ordinarily I might have reduced the shutter speed to capture more detail, but I'd left my camera in continuous shooting mode while helping out the others. We were all pleased with the results though. What a way to finish off a week of aurora chasing here in the southern hemisphere!
