Details:
While doing solar observing last night on The High Line at the Amateur Astronomy Association of New York’s weekly public stargazing event, my attention was called to a sun dog by a fellow observer. I grabbed my PHD (Push Here Dummy) camera and made a couple of quick images in full PHD mode.
Today I checked the EXIF data and used a planetarium program to determine the Sun’s location at the time of the images (1700 EDT). Then I used the second image, containing a little foreground information, and LightTrac to determine that the sun dog was about 44° north of the Sun. There was no sun dog south of the Sun where the clouds were denser.
While viewing the image on the larger screen of my laptop computer I noticed the parhelic circle abutting the northern edge of the sun dog. I opened an image in Windows Photos, cropped it and applied some basic adjustments that make the parhelic circle a little more pronounced.
I think this is the first sun dog I have seen and for sure the first parhelic circle.
