Observed this for about half an hour just as the sun was setting, so 9ish. I noticed it while watching a jets contrails waiting for Noctilucent Clouds that never happened.. It was roughly at 40-60,000 feet, nearly stationary, movement was very slow to the south. Id guess the size around a normal size jet only round, so 75-125 feet in diameter roughly. These are guesses. I thought maybe a balloon of some sort, but the height? Anyhow, never seen anything like it, help! Canon T2i, 300mm lens @ f8 at 1/125 sec. First is uncropped 300mm shot, second is cropped in for detail.

Looks like a balloon. Lots of these weather & exploration balloons flying high up there lately.

Good shot- if you see another one, you might quickly check www.flightradar24.com for your area. That site shows all the airborne flight locations in real time, as well as these big balloons. Theres several companies that fly them, and they have to have transponders, so they show up on Flightradar24.com. On some days, youll see 2 or 3 of them up there at 60,000+ feet.

Great- Glad that helped. Im in Tucson, where WorldView is located, and they sometimes launch their Stratollite balloons from here. Id like to get pictures like yours as they rise up to those altitudes. Good Seeing!
