Details:
Today, Spaceweather.com posted a disturbing image of Canes Venatici galaxy NGC 5353 group with supernova SN 2019ein taken at Lowell Observatory obliterated by satellite noise. I imaged the same object with my 14.5-inch Ritchey-Chretien telescope to study the supernova one week before the Starlink launch and attached a composite image. The magnitude of this satellite light intrusion presented by potentially 12,000 of these satellites cannot be underestimated. To me as a dedicated observer of the night sky for over 50 years and an avid underwater photographer, this satellite megaconstellation is the equivalent of polluting our oceans with plastics. I hope we take every measure possible to mitigate the effects of satellite light pollution of our night skies not only to protect the integrity of science of astronomy but also to preserve the aesthetics.
