Details:
On Thursday at dusk an unexpected electrical storm developed in a bank of cumulus cloud that had gathered over Chikanga Township near Mutare. In the space of a few minutes torrential rain and frequent ground strikes and overhead discharges took place from what appeared to be only a small volume of relatively innocuous looking cloud. This evening storm lasted for less than half an hour and is of a dangerous type that produces a disproportionate amount of lightning and only localized rainfall. If these persist and do not give way to more widespread soaking rain it is going to be a poor rainy season. The accompanying spectacular time lapse animations and mosaic were prepared from 215 frames extracted from a 25 minute video. Camera: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 in sunset scene mode.
