Later during the night I took a longer series of images to determine if a tail was actually developing. As can be seen in this iso 4500, 45x45s, Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 @ f3/5, Nikon d7100 image, post-processed with PixInsight and PS 6.0, the comet was all coma with more diffusion on the left-hand side (suggesting a tail). Tonight was the first time I could see the comet naked eye under a Bortle sky darkness of ~4.5 (nearly overhead).
With longer integrated time (more frames), noise was reduced considerable in this cropped version. This image has the same dimension as my 3 December one: www.flickr.com/photos/79387036@N07/45456780604/in/datepos....
