On October 20 in the early evening we were treated to a fine display of aurora borealis as we sailed across the Barents Sea along the Arctic coast of Norway. This is from a latitude of 70° North.
The Moon provided the illumination, for a fine view from the deck of the ms Trollfjord, one of the Hurtigruten ferry ships that ply the Norwegian coast and provide wonderful sighting opportunities for the Northern Lights from up under the auroral oval.
While a minor substorm had been predicted, none arrived this night, and when I took these images the official Kp Index was 0! Yet, we had a fine display though not with much motion and activity.
By 11 pm the arc, which had stretched across the northern sky, had faded. But for a while it provides a superb showing of the classic auroral oval above us, and an example of the aurora that is always present at high latitudes under the oval despite solar activity.
