Details:
I’m used to observing the water condensation contrails from jets against a clear blue sky, but this is a first: high clouds with both light and dark contrails side by side at the same time. The effect lasted only a few minutes. Our area was in transition from clear skies to approaching storms in next 24 hours. Observation of several of these demonstrated they each began dark, then transitioned to light appearance over a few minutes. What atmospheric and optical effects caused this?

The dark one was the shadow of the contrail which itself was above the thin cloud layer. If you have multiple cloud layers youll have multiple contrail shadows too.
