My friends and I were enjoying an early Perseid meteor watch from the Co. Antrim coast line. After a full night of watching we were about to pack up when suddenly we spotted an intense localized glow above a bank of low cloud, as we watched this glow turned into a surprise NLC display. I have been observing NLCs all my life, however I can say with a doubt that this is the latest NLC display I have ever observed. I measured it at 2 degrees above the ocean horizon, just a thumb at arms length. Type 3 brightness and sporting bands, knots and whirls. Despite its low stature it looked very impressive visually against such a dark sky background, in fact, I was able to make these NLC star trails which I have never been able to do before. Here are a few images with my 50mm lens just before dawn, this late show was of great interest to me and my observing friends.
