These are pictures of the old crescent Moon passing the first-magnitude star Aldebaran on the morning of July 10, 2018. The weather was cool and clear, unusual for early July, but it provided a beautiful view of the pair (the location was too far south to see the occultation).
Both were captured with a Canon 6D digital SLR camera and a Tamron 150 to 600 mm f/5-6.3 zoom lens (on a fixed tripod) set to 600 mm focal length. The image with just the crescent Moon and Aldebaran was taken at 4:17 am EDT. It was exposed 1/125 second at f/6.3, ISO 3200, then significantly cropped. The image with earthshine and stars of the Hyades was taken at 4:25 am EDT. It was exposed 0.8 sec at f/6.3, ISO 3200 (ten times more exposure to highlight the earthshine), then lightly cropped.
