Details:
Last night I was fortunate to fly as a guest on a SOFIA flight out of Christchurch New Zealand. Our flight path took us down to latitude 61 South and on a long westward loop from New Zealand in the general direction of the magnetic pole.
Having flown on SOFIA a couple of years ago, I knew what to expect, and came equipped with my cameras and lots of SD Cards. Despite a low Kp value of 1 throughout our flight, "lady aurora" graced the southern sky as the astronomers aboard SOFIA collected their precious data. I even got to take some pictures of the aurora from the cockpit.
