Incredible effort to capture this. I am wondering though if this is a result of the tilted lunar orbit. New moon should be completely behind the earth which would render any regular crescent impossible. Could this be a result of the new moon being higher (or lower) in its regular but tilted orbit? Could it also be a result of that there is only one place on the planet for any given month that the exact new moon is a complete alignment of the sun - earth - moon. I guess what Im saying is in a true new moon there should be no crescent at all but at certain new moons its apparently obvious that a crescent is possible based on tilt or observing location.
