Details:
The first planetary spacecraft launch from the U.S. West Coast occurred right on time. It was visible from Southern California's Joshua Tree National Park, about 300 miles to the east of the Vandenberg AFB launch site. With a waning gibbous moon illuminating the landscape and sky, the Atlas V carrying the InSight spacecraft appeared first as a cherry red glow on the west-northwestern horizon and continued toward the south as it crossed the Pacific Ocean on its way to Mars. The shot is a quick blending of 35 separate exposures; the breaks within the rocket trail occur between exposures. Photo details: Nikon D750, AF-S Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8G ED lens at 14mm, ISO 2500, 2.5 sec at f/2.8.
