It would be nice to know how close this comet will come to our solar system and/or the earth. These are great pictures and I am going to recommend them to my friends. Thank you for your efforts.

Robynne,

Comet 48P/Johnson makes its close approach to Earth on August 20 when it will be about 94 million miles from Earth. 48P is at perihelion on August 12 when it will be about 186 million miles from the Sun. It is predicted that 48P may brighten to about magnitude 11 (Seiichi Yoshidas Magnitude chart which is usually very accurate) during this time, but it is a comet and no one knows how bright it will actually become. 48Ps orbit is always within our Solar System and at aphelion is out at about the orbit of Jupiter which loves to perturb the orbit of comets. Currently the orbit of 48P is 6.54 years. This information comes from JPL and MPC ephemeris data.

Thank you for your nice comments, have a nice day and a clear night,

Mike Olason
