The solar wind from the large coronal hole has arrived! It sparked very bright and fast Auroras up here in Inari, Finnish Lapland. The first outburst of Auroras, which I did not catch on photo, happened just over one hour after sunset. So I hurried to the first location that I had in mind for that evening, and it did not take long before the Aurora showed up again. At the beginning, it was hard to distinguish against the brightness of twilight, but as minutes passed, the Aurora was getting clearer and clearer. There was also quite a lot of purple on top of the green, which is always a good sign for increased activity! Once the sky became totally dark, the Aurora kept growing and dancing faster. We even got a corona at 9:20 PM local time! After that, I switched location to a more open area and stood in the middle of a frozen lake. The Aurora kept getting stronger and at some point even almost disappeared near the southern horizon! In 6 years of chasing the Aurora up here in Inari, it was the first time that I saw the Aurora being pushed so far south (the picture with the very detailed "needles" was taken facing south at 11:29 PM local time). Finally, the Aurora came back to us and filled the entire sky. It is still going on strong outside while I write these lines, but both me and my camera's batteries needed a bit of warmth after spending 6 hours outside with -25°C (-13°F). This was for me the best display of my season in the North, on the night before the last that I am spending up here. And what a night this was!
