Mercury is the higher one. It's the hardest to spot of the naked-eye planets, as it is always close to the Sun. Its best evening appearances fall in February or March, when the plane of its orbit makes a steeper angle with the horizon. Binoculars help to pick it out against the twilight glow. This photo through a 300mm lens resembles the view through binoculars.
Over the next few evenings, Mercury will maintain its maximum 18 degrees elongation from the Sun, but it is fading all the time.
