Details:
Comet C/2017 T1 Heinze will make a close approach to Earth on January 4, 2018 when it will be about 20 million miles from Earth. This GIF was taken January 3, 2018 when Comet Heinze was about 21 million miles from Earth. The GIF is composed of 8 images each 20 seconds long with a 5 minute interval between images. To view the GIF at best resolution click on the large image. Unfortunately, the Full Moon was only 42 degrees to the southeast of Comet Heinze which did not help show the comet tail very well which is to the left of the comet coma. Due to the fast movement of the comet the images could only be 20 seconds long, anything longer would have showed a streaked comet. The short images also did not help showing the tail very well.
