I drove a Lights Over Lapland group over to Narvik tonight to hopefully get some reflections of aurora over the fjord. I was hoping we would see some good aurora in the wake of the coronal hole. We arrived at about 9:20pm and watched some nice aurora till around 10:45 at which point a huge corona developed and took over the sky.
I know in Oct I reported on a corona which I thought was the brightest in the 4 years I've worked as a guide but tonights was a magnitude brighter and faster than any I'd seen previous. I spoke to fellow Lights Over Lapland guide Chris who had stayed in Abisko who also thought it was by far the best view he had seen too. I've included a straight up corona shot at 0.25 of a second exposure and a view down the fjord at 0.4 of a second just to give you an idea of how bright they where (both at iso 3200 and f/2). Just shows there are plenty of opportunities for aurora this close to solar minimum.
Then on the way back had to stop for a full grown male moose with antlers to move off the road!
