The advantage of viewing auroras from 70° North latitude here in Norway is the early darkness at this time of year. While auroras still typically peak at midnight, tonight, November 7, the Kp Index was high as night fell in late afternoon. So our cocktail hour at 5 pm was interrupted by the appearance of the Northern Lights over the coast as we sailed south toward Tromsø on the Hurtigruten ship the m/s Nordlys. Clear skies in the early evening allowed us to take in a faint but photogenic display before dinner! The rising waning Moon provided a gentle illumination of the sky and seascape. From our vantage point under the auroral oval the main curtains appeared to the south through Pegasus and Andromeda, and overhead through Cassiopeia and Perseus. Later in the evening, clouds rolled in hiding what promised to be an even better display.
