Details:
This is what an aurora looks like from under the auroral oval when the Kp Index is actually 0! At best this night the Kp reached only 1. But the Kp was reading 0 when I took these images from the Barent's Sea off the north coast of Norway at a latitude of 71° North near the port of Berlevåg. Adding insult to injury was the nearly Full Moon. Despite the adverse conditions, the aurora still showed up! Under the auroral oval there is almost always some aurora visible. This was not a great display to be sure, but it was enough to satisfy our tour group on the Hurtigruten ship the m/s Nordlys who have endured cloudy skies up to now.
