Details:
This morning in Nice before sunrise, in the south of France, I had the pleasant and unusual surprise to spot Corsica although it is located across the Mediterranean Sea some 200km (125mi) away. I was not standing on top of a mountain, just on a balcony slightly above sea level. How is this possible then? Corsica should not be that visible, even with very clear air, because it would be then hidden by the curvature of the earth. Atmospheric refraction, combined with the fact that I was 3 floors above sea level (even that helped!), allowed to see the remote island. What you see is really just one island, which lower parts are just not revealed here.
