Details:
On the evening of 6 October the setting Sun disappeared into thin cloud while still above Murahwa Mountain (upper last image). A short time later it reappeared through the cloud just above the summit of a foothill (first picture) and for a couple of minutes a bright beam of light from the exposed portion generated magenta Crepuscular Rays which radiated back towards the main mountain face (composite image with four close-up views). These persisted for a another two minutes after the Sun had disappeared below the local horizon (third and lower last images). Magenta colored sunsets are quite common in Mutare at this time of year due to filtering of light from the Sun by low lying layers of smoke haze produced from domestic fires and dry season burning of vegetation. Occasionally, as in this example, similarly colored crepuscular rays are also produced if there is some cloud about. The photographs were taken using a tripod-mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 camera in sunset scene mode with up to x60 zoom magnification.
