This afternoon all the sudden we looked over and saw these beautiful parentheses framing our star; lasted about 10 minutes.

They are beautiful indeed. Actually, the parentheses (sometimes you see only one of them, in that case our star is only semi-framed) are so-called sun dogs or, in more scientific term, 22 degrees parhelia. They are part of the large family of ice crystal halo effects, of which the most well-known is the ring around the sun (or moon)
