Just after sunset on 28 June, the waxing crescent Moon appeared briefly from time to time through gaps in a blanket of clearing altocumulus cloud as shown in the accompanying animation. Surprisingly when not partially obscured it appeared to shine brighter, looked sharper and showed more detail than it usually does in clear blue sky at the same time of day (second and third pictures). Perhaps the contrast in lighting provided by the patchy cloud (last picture) combined with very good visibility through the gaps was responsible for this effect? The camera used was a hand-held Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 in sunset scene mode with up to x30 zoom magnification.
