Details:
Here in Mutare there is a lone, wind-blown, mystical creature-shaped Musasa tree which sits on the break of slope of a hill to the north-west of Murambi which, as observed from my house, marks the exact point at which the last direct rays from the Sun at Winter Solstice shine before setting below the local horizon. Yesterday evening (06 June) at 17.14 LT, I recorded a video through a solar filter and extracted 16 frames to produce an animation which shows the setting Sun behind this tree with Sunspot AR 2661 about to be covered by it! The next distant view taken at 16.53 LT on 21 June last year shows the last rays of the setting sun shining through the point where the Solstice Tree (not visible due to the bright glare) stands. The following closer view shows the Solstice Tree silhouetted against the bright sunset sky a few minutes later and the final animation is a comparison of the Solstice Tree after sunset on 21 June last year with it during sunset yesterday. What is interesting is that only a small amount of movement of the Sun takes place along the horizon during the two weeks preceding Solstice. The images were all taken using a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ-60 camera in sunset scene mode and up to x60 zoom magnification.
