Details:
Following yesterday’s pre-dawn Moonset on the flank of Murahwa Mountain posted to this gallery (id=135426), the Full Moon was early this morning observed setting over a distant horizon behind Chikanga extension to the west of Mutare. During a 30 minute period the Moon changed shape and color as it descended due to atmospheric refraction and a low-lying layer of smoke haze from domestic wood burning fires (see accompanying animation and mosaic). What is interesting is that only the vertical axis of the Moon shortened whereas the horizontal diameter remained the same. The changes in color from pale straw to deep orange-red were caused by the light from the setting moon being filtered by a gradual downward increase in the amount of smoke haze in the air. The full-size images contrast the color and shape of the Moon at beginning and end of the observation period. The photographs were taken using a tripod-mounted Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 camera with x60 zoom magnification and manual exposure settings.
