Details:
Yesterday evening Mutare experienced transient pastel-colored iridescence and other reflections of setting sunlight from a variety of clouds which were precursors to approaching regional rain. These included cirrostratus and cirrocumulus clouds which exhibit striation and incipient Kelvin Helmholtz instabilities (first two pictures). Later a beautiful wispy dendritic cirrus cloud shone brightly high in the sky (third picture). The fourth picture shows so many different cloud types that it could almost be used as a guide to mid and high level horizontal (non-convective) cloud formations. These include (from bottom left to top right) stratus, stratocumulus, altostratus (including lenticular), cirrostratus, cirrocumulus (Mackerel sky) and pure cirrus cloud. The photographs were all taken using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 compact camera in intelligent auto mode.
