Details:
While aurora chasers close to the auroral oval have the delights of overhead displays, here in NZ while we miss out on frequent overhead displays, we often get to see the beautiful blue purple highest parts of the aurora. This was the case last night, when the auroral storm was raging several thousand km south of my observing site in Hoopers Inlet. While I missed out on an "in your face" amazing display, I did get to enjoy some remarkable colour and rays from the topmost part of the display, which poked its head above my southern horizon!
