Details:
On the afternoon of January 25, 2017 I observed a Reflection Subsun toward the west. This was my second observation of this very rare phenomenon, the first being on Feb.1, 2008 at nearly the same location. In both instances recent heavy rains had filled the Yolo Bypass, a flood plain that is used to relieve the Sacramento River of excess water. This flooded area provided the requisite reflective surface to send the sun's rays skyward, where they reflected back down from ice crystals falling from an Altocumulus cloud.
