The photos show the top of an approaching cumulonimbus cloud that brought heavy rain to Rio yesterday about 1 hour before sunset. Amidst its mostly threatening grayish appearance that heralded an imminent storm, a delightful mist of colors suddenly popped into view from its top, that seemed to reach for the zenith. For two precious minutes, that colorful lenticular-like formation remained visible, capping the huge cumulonimbus. Then the beautiful iridescent pileus slowly drifted out of sight as it moved back to the center top of the storm cloud. Surprisingly, the show would continue, for as soon as the pileus finished hiding behind its parent cloud, awesome high-contrast shadows started to be cast. What an amazing afternoon display! Data: Canon PowerShot SX60 HS camera in auto mode set at ISO 100 - 160; F4.0-5.0 and Exp.: 1/500-1/640s; 5/1 stacking. Photos taken from 20:32 to 20:38 UTC.
