What a gorgeous last night this January in the Arctic for me! I was guiding a lovely Australian couple to chase the northern lights, and we got quite a treat! For once, the weather was clear despite the forecast announced early clouds. We took advantage of the situation by setting up on Ukonjärvi, a frozen lake that faces north. A pale bow was already visible there above the northern horizon. With a very weak Aurora forecast for this night, I did not have high hopes for a bright display, but how was I wrong! The bow grew higher in the sky, thicker and brighter, to the delight of my Australian guests. After watching the Aurora dance in the sky for a couple of hours, we witnessed a breathtaking moonrise to the East, just at the "bottom" of the Aurora bow. Hours later I am still in awe of the show that we saw. Finally, we moved to another location up a hill, where we saw the Aurora dance above lake Inari and its thousands of islands, as well as a nice shooting star! What a night! Time to go home in the morning, but I will be soon back for hopefully some more beautiful Aurora action.
